Willard BoeppleSculpture ... 14 September - 20 October 2001'Boepple's recent sculptures speak eloquently for themselves, nakedly, directly and inexplicably.'Karen Wilkin, Art Critic American sculptor Willard Boepple has exhibited his work predominantly in New York, until this year, which will be his first solo show in Britain since 1994. The exhibition consists of both wall mounted and free-standing wooden sculptures which are primarily influenced by utilitarian objects that interact with humans, such as ladders, shelves and mechanisms with levers and cogs. 'By getting back to what the body uses, I can deal with the world we build around us.' Willard Boepple It is not the objects themselves that are of interest but their dimension, size and proportions. He combines enormous variations in density, interval, internal scale that can read as everything from abstract evocations of aspiration to oddly canted cubist still lives. His craftsmanship displays his modernist sense of connection with the long history of sculpture. Boepple has exhibited widely since the mid-seventies. His work is in the collections of the metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Storm King Arts Centre, The National Gallery of Kenya, The National Gallery of Botswana and numerous other public and private collections around the world. |
