Willard Boepple

Sculpture in Wood, Resin and Watercolour

... 14 March - 3 May 2003

This exhibition marks a new development for Boepple. Whilst still fascinated by the experience and relation of the body to functional household objects such as bookshelves, ladders and machinery, his new sculptures are transformed by a new material, translucent, delicately tinted resin.

Previously working in wood, his sculptures were solid, the underlying structure invisible. The new work is now transparent; and in the same way as his ladder sculptures from the 1980’s and his more recent architectural room sculptures, the inside is outside and now visible. The carefully coloured resin glows in the light and reveals the inner making of the sculpture.

In changing the material, Boepple has allowed his focus to shift from the surface of the work to the workings within. You can now see revealed the construction of his sculptures. The pieces change with the moving light of day, they brood and glow.

In this exhibition Boepple will also be showing recent watercolours which explore the expression of his sculpture on paper. The watercolours, like the resin sculptures, live or die by transparency.

Boepple lives and works in London and has exhibited widely since the mid-seventies. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 2002. His work is in the collections of Sculpture at Goodwood, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Storm King Arts Centre, The National Gallery of Kenya, The National Gallery of Botswana and numerous other public and private collections around the world.
