Armour Series

31st October - 30th November 2002

These works were first shown in the Jerwood Painting Prize, and then formed part of Dixon's solo exhibition "Parallel Objects" at Kettle's Yard, Cambridge and have been subsequently shown at other venues.

The paintings depict sections of armour and are constructed using either oil paint or graphite on layered translucent paper, suspended within a frame. The images are like blue-prints or proto-typical moulds, where the artificial 'body' is on the borderline between its own construction and deconstruction.

"The fragility of the image negates the purpose of the armour. The objects are like shadows which have the solidity of things."

The series constitutes a part of Dixon's continuing exploration of the relationship between machinery and human experience.

Dixon studied Fine Art at West Surrey College of Art and Design and received her MA at the Royal College of Art. She has won numerous awards including The Rome Scholarship for Printmaking in 1989, The Rothko Fellowship in 1997 and was the Kettle's Yard Artist Fellow in 2000/2001. She has been exhibiting in Britain and Europe and her work can be found in many public and private collections including Victoria and Albert Museum and Arts Council Collection.
