Sam FrancisSelected Paintings ... 22 June - 28 July 2001This exhibition of Sam Francis (1923-1994) paintings - the first in London since his death - brings together works from the mid 1950's to the 1990's. It includes both small and larger formal pieces. A catalogue will be available and many of the works are available for sale. Sam Francis is regarded as one of the foremost artists of the twentieth century. Although born and educated on the West Coast of America, he was a truly international artist. He spent large amounts of his lifetime in Europe, particularly in Paris, and Japan, as well as his native California. He was strongly influenced by Bay Area abstraction in the 1950's and the work of Clyfford Still and Mark Rothko. Other influences were the New York School, including Jackson Pollock, as well as French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. The result is a poetic abstraction that eschews the 'tortured-soul' mentality of New York. His work expresses the positive emotional nature of colour and form in painting; an optimism that he also communicated in his own battle against severe physical illness. He exhibited widely throughout the world and his work can be found in all major modern art galleries.
