Sam Francis

and his contemporaries

Summer 2004

In this exhibition we are showing works by Sam Francis unseen until now along with works by friends and associates. The Francis paintings were done in New York, Paris and Tokyo - three key cities for Sam Francis.

Sam Francis Untitled New York 1959

The 1959 pieces from New York in the exhibition reflect his involvement with the American school of Abstract Expressionism. He was in New York to paint the Chase Manhattan mural, and one of the pieces in the show reflects his interest in the structure of the mural.

Sam Francis - Untitled 1960

THe 1960 piece reflects Francis's interest from his time in Paris, demonstrates clearly Francis's interest in the works of Matisse.

Sam Francis Untitled, Tokyo 1962

Tokyo is represented by two pieces from 1962. Both imbued with the zen qualities of the white background.

Jean-Paul Riopelle Untitled 1978

We also bring together works by artists that Sam Francis either exhibited with or befriended. He exhibited in numerous group shows with artists as diverse as Cy Twombly and Alan Davie. He was friends with many artists including Jean-Paul Riopelle, Asger Jorn, Jean Tinguely, American sculptor JB Blunk and in Tokyo Walasse Ting.
