Stealing From Time

The Poetry Of Politics, The Power Of Intimacy

... 21 March - 4 May 2002
"These are deep compassionate paintings that not only explore the possibilities of painting, but also what it means to be human." Sue Hubbard - Time Out

Fusing abstract and figurative elements, Griffin's paintings deal with man's never-ending attempt to make sense of life. Stealing from Time particularly focuses on issues of love (and the denial of it) in an individual, personal sense, as well as in a wider social and cultural context. Griffin combines a strong sense of freedom and justice with a humanity that reflects the intimate as well as the universal and humanitarian. His work is emotionally demanding while still being accessible on an instinctive level.

This show continues the collaboration between Griffin and the Fundacion Ortega Y Gasset in Madrid. After the London showing the paintings along with a selection of prints, will travel to the National Gallery of Argentina and Centro Culturale Borges in Buenos Aires and then on to Madrid.

"Few media images overcome compassion fatigue to the extent of Peter Griffin's profoundly moving paintings…with this show Griffin firmly establishes himself as a mover and shaker" Tania Guha - Time Out

Peter Griffin (b 1947, Wakefield Yorkshire) has had numerous solo exhibitions in major galleries and museums throughout the world and has contributed to many group shows. Recently he has worked in conjunction with the Fundacion Pablo Neruda in an exhibition, Sealed With Fire and in 1999 he collaborated with the prize-winning American playwright Ariel Dorfman (Death and the Maiden) in the exhibition Identities. In 2000 he had an exhibition at the European Parliament in Strasbourg celebrating the 50th anniversary of the European Commission of Human Rights. More recently UNESCO has approached Griffin, wanting to use his paintings to promote their organisation.

"Griffin I see as a major artist…One cannot help thinking these paintings will make the world a better place" Norbert Lynton - Modern Painters
