Ingrid KermaUnbounded 6 December 2002 - 25 January 2003For this exhibition, Kerma has expanded her investigations into the space within her paintings. Still entranced by blue, in particularly Prussian Blue (a characteristic of Kerma's pantings for the last five years), her paintings entice the viewer to touch, even to enter the blue space, yet one is also unable to locate the surface which literally 'floats' before one's eyes. In a continuation of an earlier Petrushka Series, Kerma adds expressive, electric brush marks to the blue surface. This has the effect of allowing the viewer to locate the surface of the painting, while being barred from the space behind. In a parallel series of paintings by Kerma that will be exhibited, white
squares are placed on a blue/black ground, repeated in slight shifts towards
one side. One's eyes are forced to move from the surface of the painting,
and from the space, back to the surface.
