There is no better way to experience contemporary art practice than to see the output from an innovative, creative print studio. The Print Studio, Cambridge, Ltd is a collaborative printmaking enterprise run by Kip Gresham. It is truly experimental in its outlook, more laboratory than factory and embraces the best of both the new and old technologies.

This exhibition at Broadbent is a snapshot of some of the work that has been made in the Studio over the last two years. Artists associated with Broadbent such as Alan Davie, Peter Griffin, Willard Boepple and Jane Dixon have worked with Kip Gresham over the years. And in this show there will be new work from Boepple and Dixon as well as other artists previously unseen at Broadbent.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

DOUGLAS ALLSOP is a structural minimalist. His work is most often concerned with light and reflection. The pieces to be shown are from ‘Eight Sequential Grids’. Recent Exhibitions include: Kettles Yard Cambridge, 2004; Gallery N.von Bartha, 2003; Southampton Art Gallery, 2002; Emschertal, Herne and Stadtisches Museum, Gelsenkirchen, 2001.

WILLARD BOEPPLE has just shown at Broadbent. The monotypes which are shown here are drawn from an extended period of experimentation. The vocabulary is very compressed, sensuous and is drawn from a sculptural language.

MICHAEL BRICK makes his work using simple geometry. The exhibited works are drawn from a recent group of monoprints in which a very high saturation of colour and some remarkably subtle surface modulations predominate. A ‘folio of prints to accompany the poetry of Fernando Pessoa is currently in development.
Broadbent will be showing Michael Brick’s new paintings and graphics in the autumn of 2005.

JANE DIXON is showing the Camouflage Suite. These were exhibited at the Djanogly Gallery Nottingham, the Yokohama Portside Gallery & the Tokyo gallery last year. They will be going to the next Ljubljana Print Biennale as part of the British representation. Broadbent will be showing Jane Dixon’s new paintings in March 2005.

CLAUDE HEATH is showing a piece which reveals his use of varied but co-existing types of drawing. The different types of mark and their particular colours open up the essentially layered nature of printmaking. He shows widely in the UK and overseas.

ELAINE KOWALSKI has recently been working on book projects connected to her childhood in Canada. She is showing one of the large monoprints from her series ‘Marian & Dorothy’. She exhibited last year at Platform Gallery in E1. The monoprints show an outstanding control of a very difficult medium. The layering of colour creates a very rich and engaging surface.

JOHN MCLEAN’S work is informed by a wonderfully informal geometry, resonant colour and a sense that the object has always existed, a rightness.

PHIL MORSMAN lives in Cumbria. His work often makes reference to ancient structures. He is showing two pieces from his series ‘Elvet’ which relate to the bow in the river and the castle/cathedral mound in Durham.
He will be holding a small show at Abbot Hall in Kendal in February.

DAVID RAYSON is showing three prints from a suite of twelve that are currently in development. They reflect his interest in the poetry of the ordinary. He shows with Maureen Paley Interim Art who will be presenting a major show of new work in the autumn. His recent work in Tate‘s ‘Art of the Garden’ was wonderful.
