William TillyerWatercolours ... 13 September - 19 October 2002William Tillyer (b.1938, Middlesborough, N. Yorks) will be exhibiting his watercolours at Broadbent. This is his first watercolour exhibition for 15 years. Tillyer's watercolour painting obviously comes naturally to him. With minimal brush marks, seemingly quickly set down on paper, he abstractly describes light, air, wind, water and the hills of the Irish countryside. His brushstrokes are almost calligraphic, swooping down onto the paper with assurance, yet so impregnated with water that they seem on the point of evanescing. It's as though Tillyer breathes in colour, exhaling onto the page. 'Watercolour with its laborious build up of thin veils of pigmented water was perfect for making an image which would retain every gestural mark, an image embodying its own creative history. In some ways the images are as much about watercolour itself as any ideas on architecture and landscape.' [Tillyer writing on his watercolour works.] This exhibition at Broadbent is in collaboration with Bernard Jacobson Gallery who will be exhibiting his sculpture, William Tillyer - Hardware, from 11 September - 19 October 2002. |
