Pierre Imhof
About the artist...
Pierre Imhof was born in Fribourg, Switzerland, in 1956, and moved
to London in 1979. He went on to study painting and sculpture at
Middlesex University, where he was awarded the Purchase Prize. He
lives and works in London and exhibits widely throughout Europe.
His work has been shown at the ICA, London, and he has undertaken
major commissions for clients such as Union Bank of Switzerland
(Zürich).
In his most recent work, Imhof revisits the motifs, techniques
and preoccupations of his twenty-year career as a painter: the bright
mappings and conventional signs of the more nearly representational
beginnings; the obliterating white and muted, uncertain colour of
the early Nineties; the cool, steppe-like spaces and sketchy calligraphies
that followed; the tender white and delicate flickering grids of
the new millennium, developing later into loose weaves and luminous
textures; the vibrant urban fabrics and mobile cityscapes of the
mid-decade. Registers and timbres earlier explored in isolation
come together in a complex yet lyrical musicality.
